I try and read a book every week.  It doesn’t always happen and sometimes I need to go on holiday just to catch up!  However, I notice a huge improvement in my ability to retain concepts about strength training, exercise physiology or nutrition once I’ve read a couple of books in the same area so it’s well worth doing.

Strength training - we all want to get stronger, faster and train more effectively.  Reading the approaches that other strength coaches and personal trainers use has been instrumental in helping my own training and the way I train other people.

Bodybuilding - it is said that there are two kinds of men.  There are men who want big arms and there are men who are liars.  Nobody wants to be called a bodybuilder but we all want to be bigger.  Here are some resources on how to do it or how other people have done it.

Nutrition and diet - I am passionate about people eating well, maintaining their health and being able to do the things they want to do as they get older.  A key to good healthy food consumption in my opinion is the Paleo Diet.

Stress - I am persuaded that stress is a much more significant factor in health than many people realise.  Dr Malcolm Kendrick, for example, believes it is the single most important factor in determining heart disease risk.

Health and longevity - like most people, I want to live as long as possible.  More importantly, though, I want to be youthful for as long as possible.  I believe that the best way to do that is to stay as active as possible, to keep as much muscle as possible and to eat as healthily as possible.

Sports and biography - I enjoy reading about various different sports and I particularly enjoy biographies and autobiographies.  I think that you can only learn so much from generalised information.  Sometimes, it takes the study of specifics to take your knowledge of a subject to the next level.

Cycling - I have always enjoyed cycling and it remains one my favourite ways to spend a lazy afternoon in the hot summer days.  It’s also a great sport to watch on the TV when the Tour de France is on, especially when they all crash…

Evolution and biological science - I enjoy reading popular science and I find it gives a good background to health and fitness.  I often find myself thinking how the Paleo Diet in particular is impacted on by our genetic heritage but it has ramifications for our understanding of lifestyle and stress too.
