OK, so this is going to be short and sweet again. But never fear! I will get back into the swing of doing more links in a week or two’s time…
- Eric Cressey posts irregularly but when he does it is definitely worth reading. In this article, he discloses his top tips for reading that he’s gathered over the last few years of his own personal development into one of the most well-respected strength coaches of his generation. Expect plenty of basic anatomy texts in addition to the work of Stuart McGill and Shirley Sahrmann, Gray Cook, Thomas Myers, Mike Robertson and Mike Boyle.
- Paul’s Health blog has a quote of the week that I thought was quite interesting: “Statins are the most profitable drugs in history. They’re also some of the worst.” – Tom Naughton, producer of FatHead. Given that several people who I care about take statins, this disturbs me.
- Mark’s Daily Apple has a great post about the subject of the low-carb flu that many people seem to endure when they switch from a standard Western diet to a low-carb paleo one. It seems that some people get hit by it and others don’t. Sometimes it might be genetic and other times it might be the speed of the switch to low carb. To pick a quote from the beginning: ”Some folks experience the low carb flu, and others don’t. Overall, those who have been lower carb for some time seem to have fewer problems with the transition taking their carb intake down a notch. As rational as it sounds, this trend still isn’t a hard and fast rule. Others I know went from sky high sugars to low carb cold turkey and felt great from day one.”
- IronMind reports that current World’s Strongest Man Zydrunas Savickas and Terry Hollands came joint first in the Strongman Champions League (Ireland) recently.
- RossTraining has done a round-up of some recent homemade gym equipment items, including a power rack, some squat stands, cycling rollers and parallel grip pull up handles.
- Dave MacLeod has a new-look blog and he’s been climbing with some serious competition recently, which has made him philosophise about the nature of competitive people and how they respond to injury and set-backs.
- Check out this great Charles Poliquin resource, with a huge number of links to his articles over the years. Or, for a more concise version, you can read my round-of Charles Poliquin articles.
- Dan John has written a long (and slightly rambling) article on muscle gain, championing the benefits of getting more sleep. The last time I remember reading Dan John on fat-loss he was banging on about getting more sleep as well. Somehow, I think that Dan needs to get more sleep… Anyway, it’s classic Dan John: full of great little gems to take away and put into play but also making sense as a whole.
- Check out Dave Hoff’s great 2,700lbs total at 262lbs, care of Westside Barbell…
- It’s nice to see that cyclists are getting turned on to the benefits of foam rolling. I honestly don’t know where I would be now without what I have learned about soft tissue work over the last 6 months.
- Gubernatrix has done a great post on her visit to the World’s Strongest Man Experience at the Excel Centre in London (29 – 30 May 2010). Turns out the World’s Strongest Men are great guys to boot. Who’d have thought…
- Chris Brogan got hacked off with critics disappearing up inside their own importance about how “unrealistic” the new A-Team film is. Upon finishing his rant, he realised that we have a great opportunity through Twitter and our blogs to communicate “viewers’ reviews” rather than critics’ reviews. In short, we don’t need them anymore…
- More great stuff from Jason Ferruggia, as he talks about how to get really strong, really quick. Find out about his techniques for workout programming, what he always does and what he never does.
- I’ve been messing around with Turkish Get-Ups recently but I can’t quite get to the point where I feel that I’m training anything in particular. I need more time on them, I guess. In the meantime, here’s a video from Be More showing how it’s really done:
