After last week’s mammoth effort, I’m going to tone it down a little bit. Here are my select few links for the week.
- Post of the week has to be Craig Pfisterer’s great strongman meet write up of the Battle of the Barn, where he took first place in the 265lbs and under class. I really can’t imagine how big 265lbs is but I can see it’s a great achievement none-the-less.
- This well-written piece about the increase in stress in our society is all the more powerful for being written by a healthcare professional. I’m not one for getting nostalgic but I think we’ve lost something in the last 20 or 30 years in our race for bigger and better.
- On the other hand, I think that this cartoon kind of sums up the frantic obsession that we have with education and the rather lower expectations that most jobs have of us.
- The Star Wars post this week is the official Darth Vader (Dave Prowse) website. Find out about the man behind the mask (sorry, I couldn’t resist it) and his training.
- I first read about Aubrey de Grey and the quest to stop ageing a long time ago (possibly in a Sunday newspaper). I’ve seen a few bits and pieces since then and he always seems to have a pint in his hand or on the table next to him. Is this a subtle hint that beer stops the ageing process? Or does it just make you behave like you’re 18 again? Only time will tell.
- Precision Nutrition go to town on the subject of coffee. What’s good, what’s bad and what’s indifferent. If I’m honest, I couldn’t really bring myself to read the scary bits so you’ll have to tell me if there’s anything terrifying in there.
- Another Tight Tan Slacks of Dezso Ban article this week, with a focus on training the back. Some interesting comments on slow gaining with high-protein diets, too.
- I thought Brian Shaw looked really strong in this year’s World’s Strongest Man and it seems that he has recovered from illness and is going from strength to strength.
- Maybe I’m odd but this great montage of the world’s most dangerous and complex road systems made me want to get the bike out and start touring. Well, apart from Spaghetti Junction, which is horrible (and I know because I drive it regularly).
- Diesel Crew have been running a series on the 13 things you’ll need for your first strongman competition. Some of the items may surprise you. Here are part 1, part 2 and part 3.
- If you’ve ever watched UK television you’ll know that the news reporting is very formulaic. I never realised how formulaic, however, until I watched this brilliant spoof by Charlie Brooker. Watching it, I was reminded of Brass Eye and Chris Morris’s genius.
- I’ve seen this interview with Geoff Capes before but I came across it randomly this week so I thought I’d link to it. I’ve been watching some of the World’s Strongest Man episodes from the 1980′s since I received the box set as a gift for my birthday recently and Geoff’s performances in 1983 and 1985 when he won were extraordinary.
Short and sweet this week. Hope you enjoyed them.

Top links yet again! Where do you find some of this stuff?
Thanks, Rob. I used Google Reader to sign up to the RSS feed on most of my favourite blogs and then every time it suggested a new blog to read, I said yes. Now I have thousands.
Then you just have to learn how to sift out the dross.
As the wise man said, “simple but not easy”. Like weights, really
Beer stops the ageing process?! You wish!
Is this further support for your “beer is part of a healthy diet” argument?
Beer is one of the essential food groups, along with red meat and eggs.
Anyway, I don’t make the science up, I just report it
