Don’t miss these great links!

October 29th, 2009 by Chris

This is a round up of some of the great news and comment that has dropped into my Google Reader inbox recently.  Now that I’ve set up my Google Reader to pick up a couple of hundred different RSS feeds on a regular basis and group them into different categories, I don’t know where I’d be without it.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy these posts as much as I did:

  • On October 8th, French climber Alain Robert scaled Paris’s 499-foot Tour Ariana.  If you haven’t already seen the footage on the news, go and check it out.  To climb the way he does, Alain must have balls the size of grapefruits.  He ranks right up there in my list of truly authentic individuals who just get on with doing what they’re best at irrespective of the consequences or what anyone else thinks.  A milder example, but no less authentic, might be David Attenborough.
  • This collection of bird’s eye photographs contains a number by one of my all-time favorite photographers, Yann Arthus-Bertrand
  • Apparently, Gmail users have higher credit scores than Yahoo users.  Another reason to use Gmail, then…
  • Where the Wild Things Are is coming soon to a cinema near you.  A guest post on the World’s Strongest Librarian discusses what it really means.  Just reading this post took me straight back to being 5 years old again, which is no bad thing from time to time.  Good use of the FDR inaugural address quote too.  Just fantastic.
  • Lots of people have been blogging about Hermann Goerner recently.  I’m not sure why but it’s great to read about him as it seems he was a really strong guy.  This post from RossTraining is great and so is this one from The Tight Tan Slacks of Dezso Ban.  If you really can’t get enough, here is another one from the Diesel Crew.
  • It’s always nice to see someone using dips with proper weight.  Here is a video of an athlete at Samson Strength and Conditioning using chains which they have weighed at 160lbs (72.5kg).
  • My girlfriend has just started including some supine hip thrusts into her programme after reading an article on T-Nation by the so-called “glute guy” Bret Contreras.  Here is a video on Conditioning Research of an athlete at Joe DeFranco’s Gym.  I understand that you progress this exercise first by switching from two legs to one leg only.  Which is good, as I am a big fan of unilateral leg work!
  • Adam T Glass has issued a pressing programme.  The format has quite clearly been designed to be distinctive and that makes me think that more programmes may be forthcoming.  Let us hope that this is the case…
  • If you have a strongman or grip fiend in your life but never quite know what to buy them for Christmas, a steel bonsai plant made by hand could well be the gift you never thought of.  Just brilliant.
  • Apparently, the world record for the most consecutive chin ups in one go is 611.  I never knew.
  • Train heavy.  Enough said.
  • Scarcely a day goes by without some sort of marketing hype appearing in my inbox from Zach Even-Esh.  The man is clearly on a mission to make a business success of his life.  Anyway.  I couldn’t agree more with this great post about Arnold, another truly authentic individual…
  • I must say I was surprised when I saw this author’s name pop up at T-Nation, although the title kind of gives the game away.  It’s doesn’t contain any marvellous training revelations or particularly impressive tips or tricks but its a deadlift article by Andy Bolton for crying out loud!  Read it!

Well I think that’s enough reading material for one week!
